The Lead
Well folks, I thought things had quieted down a bit for Herman Cain, his campaign and The Fourth Estate, mainstream political media
Now that his lovely wife, Gloria Etchison Cain, will do a FOX News interview, in a segment to air Monday, it is likely that the sparks will start flying again at Cain in the media. This event certainly will be a pivotal moment for Cain’s political campaign and his aspirations for The White House. It could either make him. or break him. There will be no wiggle room for Cain after Monday.
For The New York Times, in her article entitled: “Herman Cain’s Wife Plans to Sit Down for a Television Interview,” Susan Saulny writes (quotes):
“Introducing … Gloria Etchison Cain”

Mrs. Gloria E. Cain
At long last, the political spouse who has kept the lowest profile of the campaign season is preparing to make a network debut. Mrs. Cain, who has been married to the former restaurant executive Herman Cain for 43 years, is expected to sit down this weekend with Greta Van Susteren of Fox News, for a segment that could air on Monday, according to a source familiar with the planning.
Mrs. Cain has, to date, not appeared on the campaign trail with her husband, and is said to prefer her home life in Atlanta, far away from the national spotlight. But since allegations of sexual harassment began to engulf the Cain campaign almost two weeks ago, it had been rumored that Mrs. Cain would eventually come to her husband’s defense on television.

MJB’s Take
“At long last,” this is some of ”the news that’s fit to print” about a significant event in the coverage on the road to the White House and related to the process for the GOP Presidential nomination. The NYT article is well done.
Whatever mainstream media planned for the weekend political coverage will be sliced and diced. The “A Team” of media talent probably will be front and center do talk about this development.
Unquestionably, this is Cains’ weekend, for both Mr. and Mrs.; and, all hands will be on deck by every one in media in covering it.
I plan to be glued to the TV, radio and laptop screen so that I can pick up every bit and piece of coverage I can find because this is Cain’s moment. The reports, stories, commentaries, opinions and attack pieces will be flying out the door as fast as the stuff can be can be generated, published, clicked and aired. The videos and images of her interview are certain to go viral.
Mrs. Cain’s interview; all the staging which takes place in the media before her interview airs; the broadcast of the interview itself; and, all the coverage which follows will roll out in grand fashion. It will either make Cain, or break him-he’ll be heading either to The White House, or to his home in Atlanta.
This is every bit the real deal in high political drama! Stay tuned!
That’s all I can say for now.

Oh bully bully. I’m not concerned with this at all. Greta is a very fair and balanced reporter on Fox and a lawyer. Greta doesn’t like false accusations. I’m sure she will treat Mrs. Cain with the utmost respect.
This “big news story” is getting really old now IMHO.
As far as I’m concerned stick a fork in it it’s done. Axelrod has already been exposed as the devil behind this salacious tale. Usual Chicago gangsta politics for him.

I also like Greta.
If media had taken the time to do it’s job, Sharon Bialek’s story would not have received the covergae it did. What happened to the nose, gut, feel and commone sense reporters bragged about and used in the old days to lead their skepticism and dig behind a story before they ran it? I talked to one of the old school editors I knew who said he could look at her and listen to her and tell her story was flimsy.
Karen Kraushaar obviously realizes she should have left the matter rest. She flips from being undisclosed, flops to being disclosed and when the kitchen gets to too hot, decides to back down from her “joint press conference.”
The whole story line was on life support for me almost from day one. Again, as the editor told me, once media found out that Kraushaar’s deal was private and sealed, and that she did not want disclosure, it would have ended there.
When I found out about the Bialek-Axelrod connection I was floored.

Perhaps after FOX airs Mrs. Cain’s interview on Monday, MSM media can get back to its news and information role to cover, report, comment and analyze issues instead of being obsessed with rumor and gossip.
Thanks again for the visit and the comment. Come back again.

Marcjan,
There is no journalism in this country any longer. Most media outlets have no interest whatsoever in digging and reporting in any unbiased nature. It’s all gotcha crap founded on nothing but gossip and innuendo, false accusations, etc.
When Clinton’s escapades were discovered, the left was perfectly OK with that and instead demonized his accusers as trailer trash.
Just so much hypocrisy going on. During the debate last night, online Twitter was running and all I saw were comments about what a bunch of dummies and pigs the Republican candidates were. Now that scares me that there are so many damn stupid people out there. Most likely liberal loons. All I saw as each comment rolled on by was “I’ll vote for Obama if this is all the Repubs have to offer. Disgusting. These loons would rather accept a complete traitor in the WH than choose someone who may get our country on the right track again. At least one can always hope.

Good journalism is hard to find.
The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and several other major media organizations have made an effort to separate their journalism content from opinion, commentary, analysis and other content.
Because of the trends in new media, along with the societal evolution which impacts the culture and affects core values, the lines begin to blur as you move through the tiers of the traditional press, broadcast TV, cable TV, radio and online media. Blogging can run the gamut.
For example, I remember the “Meet The Press” format of the 1960′s when it was hosted by Lawrence Spivak. In those days, a guest literally met and had a conversation on the air with a round table panel of some of the top journalists in the country. They had a conversations about the headline issues facing the nation. The quality of the shows was such that students in high schools and colleges were assigned to watch the shows and write papers on the topics covered.
Today, for the most part, a guest on the show meets David Gregory, not a round table of journalists. Gregory then meets with a variety of journalists, opinion writers, analysts, media personalities and other contributors to discuss the talking points from the interview he just completed and other issues. So the slant in the coverage is driven more by his personality and biases, than by the dynamic of developing valuable information and delivering it to viewers as was done through the formats of past years.
Of course, in these times we have to deal with the trends and deliver our content.
My goal is to filter the data dump and through the morass, write and post content which is relevant to current issues, and interesting to viewers.
In this environment, that’s tough, but I’ll do the best I can.
Thanks again for the visit and comment.
Hope to hear from you soon.

marcjan,
Well you do the best you can. I’m sure you will.
I’m just thinking to myself with this interview coming up, along with drpete’s comment, I don’t see anything much this woman could add. What would she say? Yes, my husband is a serial womanizing harasser? Poor woman, I would not go on any show to talk about this issue. I wouldn’t want to stoop to the level of these media bastards to further the cause of salacious interest on the parts of some perverts or those who want to destroy Cain. He doesn’t really need her help anyway. He’s doing fine on his own. Although he is losing some of the women votes I am hearing. But then again that may be more media fuzzy polls and math.

My counsel to Mrs. Cain, based on my campaign experience, would be not to do the show.
I don’t think she will help Herman Cain in the polls.
Cain’s supporters probably have filtered the coverage, and for now are content to continue supporting him. On “Meet The Press” this morning, the commentators conceded that Cain has not been affected by the saga and the mountain of media coverage on it.
Of course, it is hard to tell Mrs. Cain no if she feels strongly about doing the interview. I expect that she will be OK, and that her husband also should be OK.

UPDATE
Fox News released excerpts of Mrs. Cain’s interview. The full interview will be aired tomorrow. They were reported in The New York Times, as follows (quotes):

I fail to see the wisdom of Mrs. Cain’s appearance. Her support advances nothing. Her demonstrating that she too is literate and intelligent advances nothing.p

From my experience working in campaigns, my gut tells me that the decision was driven by Mrs. Cain. She probably has become emotional over the attacks on her husband, and wants to speak out.
Like anything else which comes up during a campaign, the managers and handlers have to deal with the wishes of the spouses, children, other relatives and close friends of the candidate.
The problem arises when decisions like that are made. The campaign has to deal with the impact of the decisions.
Good to hear from you, and thanks for the comment.
Hope to hear from you soon.
