Dick Armey for the Tea Party: “we like Herman Cain a great deal”

Dick Armey says that the Tea Party wing of the GOP likes “Herman Cain a great deal.”

Armey is the former GOP House Majority Leader who is an activist in the Tea Party.

He was a  guest on “This Week” the ABC News Sunday morning talk show with Christiana Amanpour as host.

ARMEY: Well, we all — I speak for myself and a lot of the folks across the country with whom I associate, we like Herman Cain’s authenticity. But one thing that you can say clearly, he’s not a politician. He’s criticized by the politicians for being too amateurish, making all the wrong moves, yet he has got a personal record of accomplishments that none of them can match in terms of his personal life and what — how often he got the job done. He’s straightforward in the way he talks. And he dares to go campaign very directly and in a manner that doesn’t seem to be beleaguered by an excess of advice from political professionals. So from our point of view, yes, he’s not one of them. So, therefore, he — it makes him very attractive to us.

AMANPOUR: So is he the new standard-bearer? Because obviously Michele Bachmann had that title, that position, that self-declared sort of position during the summer. But is he now it for you? Do you think he has staying power?

ARMEY: Well, the fact is, this is a long-term process. We enjoy having people in the race, make their point of view. And we like Herman Cain a great deal. *  *  *

There are few politicians in the GOP who are more conservative than Armey. And there are few who are more active in GOP politics than Armey. So it’s fair to say at least for now that Herman Cain is in good standing in the GOP race.

Panelists on THE ROUNDTABLE segment of the show discussed: “Can Cain Stay on Top.” They included George Will, Cokie Roberts, Ron Brownstein and Austan Goolsbee.

The view this week in most of the MSM is that Cain may be able to stay on top in the contest for the GOP nomination.

Update/ABC NEWS VIDEO [Uploaded in VODPOD Sidebar (10-31-11)] The Sunday before the sexual harassment accusations surfaced about Herman Cain, former GOP House Majority Leader Dick Armey talked to the ROUNDTABLE Panel on ABC’s THIS WEEK about the sentiment in the GOP for Cain

George Will delivers a body blow to Mitt Romney

Oh boy!

If there is any writer who could influence the outcome of the GOP primary elections for President, and the nominee’s chances for winning the White House, it’s George F. Will. Dr. Will is a Pulitzer Prize winning conservative who writes a syndicated opinion column for The Washington Post.

Will has written a column which may deliver a body blow to Mitt Romney. Indeed, it could topple him on the road to the White House.

According to Politico, Will fires a shot through the growing GOP establishment consensus that Mitt Romney would be an acceptable, electable nominee:

Romney, supposedly the Republican most electable next November, is a recidivism reviser of his principles who is not only becoming less electable, he might damage GOP chances of capturing the Senate: Republican successes down the ticket will depend on the energies of the tea party and other conservatives, who will be deflated by a nominee whose blurry profile in caution communicates only calculated trimming. Republicans may have found their Michael Dukakis, a technocratic Massachusetts governor who takes his bearings from ‘data’ … Has conservatism come so far, surmounting so many obstacles, to settle, at a moment of economic crisis, for THIS?

Source: Alexander Burns, “George Will column on Mitt Romney: ‘Has conservatism come so far … for THIS?’” Politic.com: READ LINK

Talk about influencing or changing the course of history!

Does Will’s column signal the beginning of the end for Mitt Romney’s campaign?

If  Romney is done, then it’s clear that the lid will blow in the primary elections.  The GOP nomination contest will be wide open!

So who next will take the lead for the nomination?

Lighten up on Huntsman

Ok, let’s give a round of applause to Jon Huntsman’s daughters on the launch of their “Smoking Ad”  parody for their dad.

Shucks, if it works for Herman Cain, to the tune of over one million viewers, it should work for their dad too! Why not? At least it’s worth a try! Or, at least that may have been the thinking.

Here’s the YouTube link for: “Jon2012girls Smokin’ Ad,”

The L. A. Times writes:

If policy speeches and retail campaigning don’t work, there are always fake mustaches and bubbles.

Eager to find its way into any story line, the Jon Huntsman campaign is up with a new Web video parodying the viral Herman Cain spot featuring his smoke-blowing campaign manager.

The former Utah governor entered the race with great fanfare, but has resorted to such attention-seeking tactics of late as he stands mired in the low single digits.

I’m not  quick to criticize.

After all the daughters seem sincere. They could have thought that the ad was a neat way of helping their dad.

The ad is funny. Let’s see if it goes viral!

If it does, it may become something to talk about.

Cain Wows Arkansas

The Herman Cain hit parade went to Arkansas. Reports suggest that true to form, Cain knocked the ball out of the political park. He was the guest speaker and star of the show at the Annual Lincoln Day Dinner of the Washington County Republicans in Springdale, Arkansas.

Cain’s knack for exciting ordinary people is clear from news reports in the local Arkansas media. They include comments from citizens in the community.

Local television station 40/29 TV (KHBS/KHOG), Fort Smith-Fayetteville, Arkansas reported:

     TEXT

Cain gave his speech in front of 1,500 guests that paid $50 each to see the Republican candidate speak.

“You and I are going to tell this president to hit the highway,” Cain said.

The Washington County Republicans said they set an all-time record for attendance at their Lincoln Day Dinner. They said the door is open for more candidates on the trail to stop through.

     END

Now here is where the rubber meets the road-comments from four area residents after the article (thankfully we were spared the task of wading through hundreds of comments to get the voice of the people):

     TEXT

 JR Gibbs · Community College

I like Cain and think he is able but since he is not part of the political machine, I don’t think the GOP will help him and the media is going to eat him alive. *  * *

Teresa Davis · Umatilla, Florida

We the People MUST get behind Mr. Cain and force the GOP to see he is our candidate and support him! We can do this!

Carol Clint · Agent at New York Life Insurance Company

Remember us? We the People. To heck with the liberal media and the political machine. The liberal media is self destructing and the political machine has rusted out! *  *  *

You said: “It will replace the Capital Gains Tax, the Pay Grow Tax and the Death Tax, all with 999,” Cain said. “We wanted it to be simple: 999. No hidden lines. I try to make it complicated, folks, but I can’t.” *   *  *

Jason Tolbert also covered the event. He writes The Tolbert Report Blog on talkbusiness.net, an Arkansas online journal which covers business and politics.  Tolbert is a CPA in central Arkansas who has been involved in state politics for the past 13 years. He is one of the leading conservative writers in the state.

Tolbert wrote:

Republican Presidential candidate Herman Cain spoke Thursday evening to a record northwest Arkansas crowd, which he brought to their feet with several standing ovations during his lively speech.  *   *   *

“Thank you for making this the most successful Washington County Lincoln Day Dinner ever,” organizer Robin Lundstrum told the crowd. She noted some of their past speakers have included Bill O’Reilly, Mike Huckabee, Steve Forbes, Newt Gingrich, and Bobby Jindal. Tonight’s event was the largest with over 1,450 tickets sold.

“The American dream has been hijacked, but we can take it back,” said Cain, who accused liberals of hijacking the American dream.  He addressed the economic and military strengths that people attribute to the United States saying that we can restore America’s greatness again.

Cain said the pundits did not expect him to win until his surprise first place showing in the Florida straw poll, but now many are beginning the listen.  He credited his rise in the polls to the “voice of the Tea Party.” “The voice of the people is more powerful than the voice of the media,” said Cain. “Message is more important than money.”

Cain’s appearance in Arkansas, which has a late May primary, is a rare one for a Presidential frontrunner, but a sell-out crowd in Springdale got a closer look at the national GOP poll leader tonight.

One of the four comments to the article was quite interesting:

     TEXT

Alfred Charles Lewis

Thank the Lord for sending us Herman Cain now we have a choice. Not just between the lessor of the evils. We now have the opportunity to pick a man with principles that run deep in his soul like Reagan. Let us pray, Thank you Lord that you have raised up Herman Cain for this day. Arise and shine for the light has come and the Glory of the lord has risen upon thee! Herman Cain. We pray the Lord that you will give the people spirit to rise up and volunteer, give finances, speak passionately and at the end of the day we will see Lord you are aligning a veritable army around this man Herman Cain because righteousness, justice, and truth need to be restored to America. We prey in Jesus name AMEN

The takeaways from the news reports and citizen comments almost scream at you.

A speaking event for Herman Cain sells more tickets than events for speakers like Bill O’Reilly, the number one conservative cable talk host; Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas, former GOP candidate for President and a contributor to FOX News; Steve Forbes, publisher of Forbes Magazine and former GOP candidate for President; Newt Gingrich, former GOP Speaker of the House and a GOP candidate for President; and Bobby Jindal, GOP Governor of Louisiana and a frequent guest on MSNBC, CNN and FOX!

A citizen commenting by thanking the Lord for sending us Herman Cain and giving us a choice!

That’s powerful stuff!!

Herman Cain is reaching and touching the average voter. And at least so far, he’s beating his competitors because he’s doing a better job of touching common people than they are.

There is a view that Cain is so appealing because he is uniquely different as Presidential candidates go. In commenting on his campaign ads, NPR noted:

     TEXT

Mark McKinnon, who produced ads for the campaigns of George W. Bush and John McCain, says that unconventionality is the point.

“That may be the brilliance of it,” he says, “that it captures our attention; it makes us really wonder. But at the end of the day, as different, as unconventional and as weird as they are, there is a fundamental message in them that says, ‘I’m different. I’ve got a different approach. People are sick of everything they’ve seen before. They’re sick of all the slick advertising that they’ve seen from everybody else, so why not take a different approach?’ And that’s kind of the whole Herman Cain message: Why not something different? Why not Herman Cain?”

Is that what’s going on, Herman Cain is uniquely different?

Is the message from Arkansas: “Why not Herman Cain?”

Will that message resonate with voters throughout the GOP primary election contest?

Could that message resonate with the voters of America in the 2012 general election?

Are Herman Cain’s Campaign Ads Seriously Real As Conceptual Art?

Herman Cain’s campaign video ads on YouTube have drawn a lot of interest and a lot of coverage.

There is the smoking ad and the Western short film yellow flowers ad.  Commentaries run the table on whether the ads are Presidential campaign level material,  and even whether Cain himself  is a Presidential candidate to be taken seriously.

John Presnall is a serious writer. He edits the Postmodern Conservative Blog on FirstThings.com, the online edition of First Things, a respected and influential journal about religion and society.

On his Blog, Presnall has published a very interesting article entitled: “Herman Cain Gets Seriously Real with Lighthearted Conceptual Art,” in which he talks about the ads, and describes them in a serious context. I will not spoil the fun of reading Presnall’s article  by excerpting from it. Read the article yourself, and draw your own conclusions.

But after reading it, you may feel inspired to comment on these questions.

1.  Are the ads  ”Lighthearted Conceptual Art?”

2.  Is it your sense that “Cain Gets Seriously Real” in those ads, and that they convey serious political messages?

3.  Are the ads “Presidential?”

4.  Will the ads help or hurt Cain’s campaign?

Iowa primary: is it Herman Cain’s “High Noon?”

Herman Cain, touted as No. 2 in the polls, enters the Iowa primary facing Mitt Romney, the front-runner, Rick Perry and the other GOP contenders. He must feel a bit like Marshal Will Kane facing the gang of outlaws in “High Noon,” the 1952 American Western film classic starring Gary Cooper as Kane.

Marshal Kane confronted the gang all alone. And, in the Iowa Primary, candidate Cain, with no support from mainstream conservatives, confronts a field of “take no prisoners” GOP contenders all alone.

So far, with not much of a team and little campaign cash, Cain has done remarkably well. He’s climbed up in the polls, while Rick Perry has fallen down. Mitt Romney has stayed even. For the Iowa primary, Perry has now put an “A” team on the playing field, some of the best campaign talent on the GOP bench. Maggie Haberman writes about these GOP all-stars in her article: “Rick Perry’s new team,” posted online in Politico.com.

What does all this mean for Herman Cain, and his prospects for winning the Iowa primary, or staying ahead of Rick Perry?

It’s Herman Cain’s “High Noon” moment!

Like Marshal Kane, candidate Cain either overtakes the GOP field in the primary or beats Perry against the odds, thus positioning himself to vault to the top of the field and sustain his place for the duration of the GOP nomination contest; or in 10 weeks, he’s overtaken and kicked to the sidelines for good.
